Singaporean competitors gained top 3 placing at MuscleMania World Championships USA
First Singapore competitors CJ Phan and Tong Chin Wee, gained top 3 placing in their respective weight categories at the recent MuscleMania World Championships USA.
CJ placed second (2nd) in the welterweight Open category (below 170 prounds), while Tong Chin Wee placed third (3rd) in the middleweight Open category (below 185 pounds). Victor Lee, in the novice category, placed fifth (5th) in the bantamweight category (below 140 pounds).
All three Singaporeans competed against some of the finest natural bodybuilders from the world, at the leading open fitness and bodybuilding competitive forum in the USA, held in Redondo Beach, California, USA, on November 15th, 2003.
Fierce competition from the best
CJ competed against some of the toughest competition in the world under the welterweight category, including competitors from USA (Lousiania, Illinois, New York, Florida, New Jersey, Maryland), Mexico, and some from Indonesia and Taiwan ROC.
Tong competed against equally formidable competition in his weight category, including those from USA (California, Utah), Canada, Bulgaria, New Zealand, and Mexico.
Lee competed against competitors from USA (California, Texas, Wisconsin), Australia, Bahrain, and New Zealand.
Taking Singapore to the world map
CJ has been competing since his teens, and is the co-author of the peer-reviewed book "This Body This Life" (http://ThisBodyThisLife.com), a book on health, fitness, nutrition, stress management, and longevity, together with older brother and fellow fitness practitioner Dr. Seamus Phan (http://keynotepresenter.com).
"I am pleased with my results as a competitor at MuscleMania, especially when faced with formidable competition from the best around the world." says CJ. "Not many Singaporeans have done well in global events, and I hope that my sporting achievement plays a small part in inspiring Singaporeans to know that with hard work, discipline, dedication and passion, we can also place our footprints in the fiercest of competitive climates, whether it be sports, research, business, entrepreneurship, or leadership. In a small way, the book This Body This Life, co-authored with my brother Seamus, represented a minor success in reaching the global community, including the USA."
For CJ and Tong, who trained as a team for 4 years, switched from their former affiliation to accept the challenge of an open competitive platform, MuscleMania. Both CJ and Tong won gold medals for Singapore in their respective body weight classes at the Commonwealth Bodybuilding Championships last year in Calcutta India, and each has won the Singapore Nationals several times.
