Soaper Blends Handcrafted Artistry with Gentle Care
The nation's bubble hounds have a hot new way to suds up and soak. River Girls Silky Soap & Bath, a web-based retailer, produces fine bath and body products in small fresh batches. Each week, River Girls incorporates the best of nature's harvest and an artistic eye to create its handmade line of gentle soaps and toiletries.
Proprietor Wanda Fleming notes that "River Girls products personify a soothing whimsical spirit. Unlike the plastic factory approach to mall bath shops, we take an old world artisan tact. It's about personable luxury. That each item is hand poured, hand blended and individually prepared speaks to an intimate art-inspired approach".
River Girls uses no animal fats or mineral oil in its products. From apricot and almond to rosehip and shea, fruit, nut and vegetable oils and butters dominate --- as do complex fragrances, aromatic essential oils and hot swirling colors. Pure honey, as well as coconut milk, and organic calendula which Fleming's father grows in his District garden also star.
River Girls online shop offers a line of wildly popular glycerin bars as well as its Luxury Liner collection of handmade soaps made of 40% olive oil. All lotions, bath truffles, creams and sugar scrubs are developed from scratch and are geared toward dry skin looking to be quenched.
A native Washingtonian and former child development consultant and teen zine publisher, Ms. Fleming, entered into soap and cream making in 2001 after her family's young son developed eczema. Those beginnings translate into products which consistently reflect both superior beauty and gentleness.
